Bio:
Deke O'Brien has a long history dating back most notably to Bluesville (1964-65),
the first Irish band to enter the US charts, and Bees Make Honey (early 70s,
with Mick Molloy), whose "Music Every Night" LP (EMI, 1973) was an early pubrock
landmark.
In 1976 he undertook an important Irish tour with the Boomtown Rats.
The Nightbus singles appeared around this time. These are credited to Nightbus
the band but when the "Nightbus" album came out it was credited to Deke O'Brien.
The lineup listed above is taken from the
LP credits.
The Nightbus album is usually described as pub rock, but Dr.Feelgood it aint!
This is a mellow LP with a very laid back West Coast feel, in keeping
with the late, unreleased Bees Make Honey recordings.
Most of the Nightbus backing band later became Stepaside.
Deke was probably involved in the original Stepaside, but I haven't sussed that out
yet. He also fronted The Sharks.
Deke also did a lot of production work during the late 1970s and early 1980s for
Mulligan Records among others, and co-founded the important
Scoff Records label in 1979.
All in all a very important figure in Irish rock history who deserves a better bio
(I'm working on it).
