It is the nature of sites like this to be constantly in need of updating. So many errors and omissions, so little time. I always need new or better quality photographs and cover scans, that goes without saying, but I could also use your help with . . .

I'm looking for any Irish fanzine from the 1970s or 1980s: originals,

I recorded many Fanning sessions off the radio and I'm sure I wasn't the only
one. I lost all my tapes when I moved house several years ago. Help me
heal this painful memory by sending me copies of whatever you have, tape or
CD-R. If I ever win the lottery, I'll set up a record company and license the
sessions from RTE, just like Strange Fruit did with the BBC Peel Sessions.
Is there a Fanning session archive? If you are Ian Wilson, please email me!
Just because a record appears on this site doesn't mean I own a copy or have even heard it. If you have spare copies of anything you're willing to part with, then please send them to me. If you released a record or tape and still have copies lying about in the back of the wardrobe/attic/cowshed, please dig them out and send them to me. When I die, I'll leave them all to the State.

Remember the music section on Anything Goes on Saturday morning?
Remember Aonghus MacAnally giving guitar lessons to some fat kid while extoling the virtues of Dire Straits?
And Noel Bridgeman teaching drums on a block of wood with lino stuck to it and explaining paradiddles?
Dave Heffernan and Our Times? Sounds of the Seventies? Aspects of Rock???
What about Megamix? TV Ga-Ga? Youngline? On The Waterfront?
Campus Rock?
I remember most if not all of these shows but I never had the opportunity or foresight to tape them
(Curse my family for being too poor and technophobic to own a VCR in 1980!)
Is anyone out there sitting on mountains of video??
Upload to YouTube please!
(but..um.. send me high definition DVDRs of the material, obviously.. OK?)
Some enterprising individual made an excellent bootleg DVD-R collection of the
TV appearances of the main Belfast punk bands. Someone needs to do this
for the stuff broadcast by RTE!
See the video page for details of what's out there right now.
Also see the Film & TV section on the Resources page for more details of what
was broadcast.
Auric Records -- early 80s
Bandbox Records -- 1978
Souterrain -- Mark Clinton's label -- released the superb Those Handsome Devils single (which I need badly),
and at least one single by Mark himself, but what else?
Traffic Jam Tapes -- mid-80s tape label in Raheny, Dublin; what did they release?
[6] Bands I need more info about...
Most of these bands have no entry yet, some only a skeletal entry. I need basic bio info about these bands. If you remember anything about any of them, then please get in touch. 19:91 -- c1980 Dublin band, led by an American named Tom. 1990 -- promising Cork trio (based in Dublin? London?) with two ex members of Driveshaft, Wayne Sheehy (also in Cactus World News and Hinterland) and leader Kieran Kennedy.above: Cork trio 1990 in 1993 3355409s - Cork spikey pop band, recorded demo in 1988, "Celebrity Blackout", one track ("Barbarous") on Comet LP. Recorded at Elm Tree Studios, Mardyke Walk, Cork; Engineered by Ger O'Leary and Produced by the 33554O9's and Ger O'Leary. Vocals: Ruth Beecher Guitar: Dave O'Connell Bass: Jerry Buckley Drums: Paul Prior Introduction and Conclusion: Caroline Parr. Guitarist David O'Connell previously in Urban Blitz, later emigrated to Australia. 8 1/2 -- Cork band, active 1984, punk? Abbey -- c1975-76 Dublin area band The Abnormal -- Dublin punk c1982-83. Rehearsed in the same building as Paranoid Visions and Defoetus Attitude. They did a few gigs and recorded a very good demo. Described as a "racist oi! band" in the scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984), is this true? Made a video and recorded tracks for a comp LP according to MRR #17 (September 1984) Adolf Grunt -- Cork punk band ex Berserk, recorded a demo c1980, anyone have it? A Goat in Wine -- Virgin Prunes related band with Janet Nolan, Jackie Murphy (sister of Tommy Murphy AKA the Bottle of Milk of the Virgin Prunes universe), and Gavin Friday's brother Robaird. Didn't do too many gigs. Agony Column -- not to be confused with the bands from leeds. Does anyone know about this Irish band? Aiken Drum -- Finglas based synth trio active 1985-86, pre Lord John White, with Paul Condon and possibly Martin McCann. Electro-pop a la Depeche Mode. Appeared on Street Carnival Rock EP (1986) with "The Hearing", and also released at least one single... details anyone? Did one of the band became an audio engineer at a studio located in Christchurch Cathedral? Albania -- obscure Portrush based band with Dougie Gough (pre Mighty Shamrocks) on guitar. Was this the same band who recorded several singles and one LP for Chiswick? They're usually described as Scottish but its not unusual for a N.IRL band to have Scottish links. Albania were signed in London in 1978 but didn't release an LP until 1981, by which time Dougie was in the Mighty Shamrocks. The main songwriter on the Albania album was K Y McKay or Kaytie McKay. If you know more about this band, please get in touch. Note there was an Albania best of CD approx 10 years ago (the amusingly titled Life After Death Is On The Phone: The Best Of Albania). Did this have liner notes which might tell the Albania story? Alcove -- Dublin early 80s Alfalfa -- released a single in 1988 "Breakout" Alice in Wonderband -- Cork c1983, fronted by Neasa De Bearoid. Recorded demo at Ballinadee Studios, Bandon mid-1983 incl. track "Illusions" Alienated - Belfast - Mentioned in scene report in MRR #29 (October 1985) Alien Comfort -- c1982-84, from Finglas, Dublin, described as heavy white-funk-reggae "shades of The Police/Men At Work" according to Hot Press (so bound to be true, eh?) Demo tracks: The Price We Pay / Thoughts of Losing You / Politicians / Finglas Reggae Alleycats -- c1985 Dublin hard-ish rock band with drummer Brain Downey (ex Thin Lizzy), guitarist Joe Staunton (ex Orphanage a.o.) and bassist Pat Courtney (Xerxes, Daddy Cool & The Lollipops, Sacre Bleu) and a singer (name?). Became Talk To Strangers in 1987 with Peter Fitzpatrick on keyboards. Talk To Strangers -- 1987 - Dublin Joe Staunton - guitar Peter Fitzpatrick - keyboards & backing vocals. Pat Courtney - bass & vocals Brian Downey - drums The Alleycats became Talk To Strangers in 1987 with Peter Fitzpatrick on keyboards. For a short time Joe Staunton was replaced by Dave O'Toole on guitar. A demo was recorded (pre Fitzpatrick) and there are live tapes in circulation (including one recorded at Morans Hotel). The group played extensively around Ireland and performed some Thin Lizzy material but was primarily a blues outfit playing British Blues of the late 60s in the style of John Mayall, Fleetwood Mac etc. They had a long running residency in Slatterys of Capel Street. One evening Gary Moore sat in with the band playing 'Parisienne Walkways' and some blues standards. Brian Downey called on the services of Pat Courtney and Peter Fitzpatrick for a one-off Thin Lizzy reunion with Eric Bell in the now demolished-for-progress New Inn. This was the 1989 Vibe For Philo which had yet to reach the commercial heights of The Point. Alphabet Music -- played The Magnet in Dublin in 1981 with Microdisney Alpha Squared -- mid-80s, recorded "Pictures in Postcards". The Alternatives -- c1979 Dublin band, supported Strange Movements/Boy Scoutz/Blades at The Magnet in 1979. Still active c1981. Anathema - Belfast - All girl band mentioned in scene report in MRR #29 (October 1985) And Why Not -- demo tape c1988 of Cure-like noises over a basic beat Another Problem - played the Magnet regularly. Lead singer Spud Murphy, guitarist Ian Gilmour, drummer Brian (?). Recorded a demo. Anthony & The Alcoholics -- who was behind this novelty single ("Whatever Happened To Kuckoo") in 1986; see Anthony McCarthy Apocalypse -- from Drogheda, made a demo Apple Market In Eden -- from Drogheda, active 1989-90 Aragorn - Dublin c1982 Archie The Leper -- NWOBHM from Portrush, c1982 Gary McClure (vocals), Peter Manley (guitar/backing vocals), John Manley (drums), a.o. Any recordings? Peter Manley later in White Roxx. Argus -- Derry, mid-80s, named after Wishbone Ash LP? Arnheim -- released a cassette on FOAD, later released on LP on Words Of Warning A Splash of Red - one track ("No Barriers") on the Snap Shots sampler (1987) Tim Boland - guitars/vocals/etc, songwriter with Dave McConnell (bass) and Nigel Flegg (drums) Assault - N.IRL punk band mentioned in scene report in MRR #9 (1983) Assembley or Assembly -- Leslie Dowdall A Terre -- Formed 1981, Dublin band, live debut 12 Feb 1981. Lineup: Finbarr O'Farrell (vocals and guitar), Trish O'Farrell (from 1982, keyboards), Jerry Brady (bass). Stephen Ivors (some doubt over name?) played guitar during the band's final year. O'Farrell's were siblings. Regularly supported The Low at The Ivy Rooms on Parnell St Dublin (now Fibber Magees). Finbarr was a member of the Worker's Party and they often played the Worker's Party social club Club Ui Chadhain in Gardiner Place. Mini tour of Ireland playing among others Limerick University and An Triskel Arts Centre in Cork. Poorly recorded demo tape reviewed in Vox #11 (1982) described by Dave Clifford as "mood-poetry-music", outside the rock and classical domains. Song titles: Sam's Cross / The Chain And The Rope / Our Loss At Beal Na Blath / Leaves For The Burning / Entering Free Derry / On Our Knees / Release Her. Also recorded a Fanning Session. Some of the music was quite political in tone and to this end, they were one of the earliest bands to use samples e.g. Brendan Behan singing "The Bold Fenian Men" and Michael MacLiammoir reciting Yeat's, "Red Hanrahan's Song About Ireland". Unique at the time. "The Devil Of Eire" was a pun on De Valera's name. Trish O'Farrell left after about a year, in 1983, and the remaining trio carried on into 1984 and split sometime later, Finbarr moving to Germany in 1985. At The Window -- c1989, trio from Shannon in Cure/New Order vein Atonomy - or Autonomy? Dublin punk band, 1981-82, featured in Vox magazine. lineup: Maria Mulraney (drums), Siobhan Corrigan (bass) and Stephen Ivers (lead guitar). Maria & Siobhan from Drimnagh, Stephen from Finglas. Later joined by Gareth Ryan on synth who worked in Golden Discs in Liffey Street but he was hospitalised on the first night with appendictis and didn't play many/any gigs with them. This is the same Gareth Ryan who later worked for Rough Trade and was involved with Kissed Air/Kabuki Records in 1982-83. Average Contents -- Dubin early 80s, rehearsed at Dorset Street studiso run by Vince Bowe (of AWOL) The Azarians -- Dublin mid-80s, c1986-87, goth? Babylon the Bride -- from Dublin?, goth band? Baby Sex Priest - one track ("Mother Earth"> on Comet EP One The Baby's Head -- Andrias O'Gruama ex Zerra 1, pre Fatima Mansions; recorded two singles for Kaspar Records. Back From The Dead -- Dublin punk band, mentioned in scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984) Backwards Into Paradise -- recorded a Fanning session before becoming Into Paradise Bald Aggression -- late 80s punk from Donegal Baldy Scaldies -- early 80s, Drogheda band; Mick Reid, David Gavin, David Milne Bastard Squad - Belfast - mentioned in MRR #17 (September 1984) Bastard Youth The Bats -- ex Strange Movements Belsen or Belson -- mid-80s Cork, some sources describe them as raw punk who recorded a demo tape reputedly similar in style to The Clash; but at some point they began to play white reggae and eventually morphed into the funkier Belsonic Sound. Berserk -- previously listed here as BerZerk -- Cork's first punk band Big Electric Cats -- Belfast cowpunk Big Orange Peel - one track ("Just Like Lisa") on the New Eclipse Records sampler (1990) The Black Catholics -- Late 70s/early 80s Dublin punk with a self-destructive streak. Mostly from Finglas area, Bohemians supporters. Played live just once, at the Dandelion Market circa May 1979, supporting The Letters. Singer died aged 18... reputedly suicide... anyone know the circumstances? Replacement named Dave Donnelly. There are no recordings apart perhaps from practice tapes. Gained a reputation for wreaking havoc at other bands gigs (especially "new wave" bands) but this was not the band itself, it was fans/supporters who chanted their name at other gigs. Eventually the name became associated with this gang. The gang attacked/disrupted one gig as the CIE Hall staged by the bands from the Belfast anarchy centre (Stalag 17, Toxic Waste, supported by Paranoid Visions). But Allan Clarke of Ruefrex reputedly dealt with them effectively at the Mansion House... anyone there? Blackout -- Belfast c1983 Black Revolvers -- punk band from Tuam disreputable behaviour described in the scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984) described by NME as "Irish Iremongers" for some of their antics The Blackouts -- Dublin c1978-79, full page ad in Heat 2/2. Any more info? Peter Delaney (v), Paul Aungiers (g), Ray Harford (b), Paul Joyce (d) Aungiers and Hartford later in the Fast Skirts Unrelated to the Seattle Blackouts! (also released in UK on Situation 2) Black Revolver -- Dublin? Punk band, c1982-83 Blah! Blah! Blah! -- c1983-86 Belfast band, ex Serious Mistakes not Blam Blam Blam as previously reported (damn these grainy photocopies!) This was reputedly a bluesrock a la Rory Gallagher; Lineup: Topher Louden (guitar & vocals), Ian Wilson (guitar & vocals), Adrian McCluskey (bass) and Philip 'Rufus' O'Callaghan (ex Sample & Hold, drums). The band left for France 1986 except Adrian McCluskey who was training as a nurse and decided not to go; split 1990. Blue Angels -- from Cavan, active 1979, more details please. Phelim Cox (lead vocals), Paul Myers (lead guitar), Jim Dunn (lead guitar), Martin McCleary (bass), Paul Cox (drums) Blue Movies -- mid 80s Dublin New Romantics who included Billy McGuinness, later of Aslan Blue Ocean -- from Finglas/Glasnevin area (Dublin), singer Barry Bourke, one track ("White Witchy Woman") on the New Eclipse Records sampler (1990) released a single (on New Eclipse?) Bogey Boys -- a well-known band, of course, but what I is more information about the reformend lineup who did the "Back To Basics Tour" in January 1986; was it the original lineup? did they record anything? how long did it last? Boneshakers -- Dave Finnegan's band in 1985, Cramps/psychobilly style, any recordings? Both Ends Burning -- from Finglas/Glasnevin area (Dublin), Carling/Hot Press finalists 1990, Roxy Music influence? released a single Boulder Band -- pre Bagatelle, but how many beards? Brainchild - two tracks on the Snap Shots sampler (1987), both group compositions Paul Redmond - vocals, Leslie Keye - guitar/keyboards, Jonathan Reichental - keyboards Brat -- Carling/Hot Press finalists in 1988. AOR? Broken Doll -- Dublin early 80s Broken Hymens -- all-female, Dublin punk, supported Paranoid Visions in JJ Smyths in 1987 or 1988. Bruce Wayne Experience - one track ("Midnight") on the New Eclipse Records sampler (1990) Brown Thomas AKA The B.T.'s -- in 1978-79 known as Brown Thomas, shortened to the B.T.'s late-1979. Bumper To Bumper -- despite those involved, this was a covers band (Crusaders, Steely Dan, LA Express, etc). members of The Business, plus Greg Boland (of Scullion) (g), Paul McAteer (d), Bill Whelan (p) Burning Cross -- punk band mentioned in scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984) (This) Burning Effigy -- Goth band, Mick Mercer has photos for sale on his site. Released "To Bestial Gods..." demo, correct? Catholic Guilt -- early/mid-80s punk/hardcore from Mullingar. Released a 17-song tape according to the scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984) One track titled "Boring Town". Also slated for inclusion on a 5-band international punk cassette EP on Neu Carnage with Toxic Waste, Capital Scum [Belgium], Vortex [Belgium] and Warriors of the Last Days [Columbia]. Played at the "Let's Get Serious 2" punk festival held at the TV Club on the 30 September 1983 featuring the cream of Dublin's punk bands at the time plus headliner Conflict. Described as Irelands premier thrash band by Neu Carnage in MRR #17 (September 1984) Split for a few months during 1984 due to police harrassment then reformed. One member possibly named Shark. Possibly have a track on "Tour De Farce II" compilation tape (Empty Records MT-019, Germany 1987), assuming it's the same band. International punk compilation featuring bands from 39 countries including Vortex, Stupids, Subhumans, Wretched, No Lip, Powerage, Inferno, Dezerta, Die Trottel, Rejestracje, etc. Note there is NO Catholic Guilt track on any of (NYC's) Big City Record's compilations. Performed about 9 gigs in total (The Underground, Baggot Inn, etc) A demo was recorded in Strand Street Studios in February 1987 engineered by Denis Begley who was the live sound man for The Subterraneans. These two tracks 'America Bound' and 'Summertime' more than hinted at a pop sensibility in keeping with the 1986-87 chart. During the spring and summer of 1987 they attracted interest from some UK labels (unbeknownst to the majority of the band... who didn't find out for some time about this) In summer 1987 the singer left the band and despite a change of mind on his part some weeks later the band split. During the autumn of 1987 the band auditioned for a new singer and Joyce Murphy joined in September 1987. Originally from Cork, she'd previously been with the Wilde Oscars (who hailed from Rush?) By the end of the year, Cat Magic with new singler Joyce Murphy had changed their name to Kick. Chapterhouse -- Cork mid-80s, formed by Skully (ex Real Mayonnaise) and Ann Redmond (ex Porcelyn Tears), the result more Porcelyn Tears than Real Mayonnaise, recorded "Seventh Heaven", released at least one 7-inch, maybe two... details please... Cherry Blossom -- from Cabra The Circus -- duo from Malahide, recorded 3-song demo tape at Chrome Yellow's Lada Studios c1988 Clamy Domonas -- Cork, c1980, playd with Nun Attax and pre- Microdisney Constant Reminders Clark's Gable -- what a terrifically bad band name! A duo active in the late 80s and early 90s in Dublin. Recorded a 4-5 song demo tape in the late 80's called "The Meter On Your Bed" (a Leonard Cohen reference apparently) consisting of darkish synth pop, pretty good at the time, with good lyrics. Frontman Ciaran Gorman is now better known as Perry Blake who's released several successful albums since 1998. thanks to Neil Farrell for this info. The Classics -- c1986 Beatles-ish Dublin guitar pop band The singer was a guy from Wolverhampton called Nigel Williams. His girlfriend Maureen from Scotland was on guitar. Managed by Robbie Jones The Cold -- became the String Men Cold Sweat and The Electrodes -- Cork c1983, metal band, mostly covers? The Coletranes -- pre Revelino, the Coletranes were definitely gigging circa 1989, and had singles imminent on Vixen (in late 1990) and then Son(Mother) ("Wake Up", early 1991) but neither came out AFAIR; the band eventually debuted with a cassette EP, no? Complete Chaos -- Early 80s Dublin (hardcore) punk ...Or perhaps earlier, 1978, and just one (chaotic) gig? Did the band reform in the 80s? Singer was Joe Morris and guitarist (Mad) Frank O'Neill. Song titles: My World At Night/ I've Been Ruined The Condemned -- Dublin punk c1981-82 Never got further than the practice room and were really only a bunch of 15 year olds learning to play. Also with Linus McLaughlin (bass) and Kevin McLaughlin (vocals), presumably all related, and Peter Roddy (guitar). Short-lived. Cosmetic Plague -- Named after a Rudimentary Peni track, mentioned in the scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984), though the guitarist pictured (below) is PA of Paranoid Visions. So where were Cosmetic Plague?
Crazy Times -- c1983 rockabilly The Crazy Wolves -- rockabilly Crocodile Tears -- not the band from Omagh; possibly from Dublin, this band recorded a Fanning session ("Tuesday Morning", "Suzy Sweetness", "Goodbye Suzy Ann"). Crude & Snyde -- mid-80s from Drogheda, recorded a demo, played in Dublin in 1986 supporting Stalag 17 Crystal -- Goth-tinged band, from Cork, led by Alan Murphy (ex How And Why Insects), in collaboration with Lisa Bafakih. The demo received a good review in Hot Press and was played on a few of the still existing FM pirate radio stations during the spring and summer of 1988. In late-summer 1988 the band split (for no particular reason though the guitar player wanted to do something else). Ironically one week after the split they were offered an appearance on the Late Late Show as a result of their tape being heard by an enthusiastic RTE employee who brought it to the attention of the production team. Unable to locate Joyce Murphy the band declined the appearance. She may have moved to France (if you're reading this Joyce, please get in touch). Killer Goat - one track ("Cowboy X") on the Guru Weirdbrain LP (1985) Kidz -- Cork band, active c1980 Kitsch Is Rich -- mid-80s contemporaries of Bam Bam & The Calling, from Derry but Belfast-based; Reputedly powerpop with 60s influence, jangly guitars and terrific vocal harmonies, considered very promising, won the Smithwicks Rock & Pop Award 1985, so what happened? Band was called Wildlife, consisting mostly of relatives. Recorded a demo in 1983 w/ "Wildlife"/"We Know It's Not You" Appeared on SBB -- anyone have a video? Nothing happened for the band, probably due to lack of commitment of other members, and Richie/Larry stuck to cover bands and/or folky material therafter. This included the pop/cover/showband called Jukebox which included future Tuesday Blue drummer Ray Fean (pre-1986) and future Toucandance drummer Tommy Brennan (1986-88) Later reverted to the Richie Laurence Band or Richie Laurence Squad But does anyone have this heavy rock demo from the early 80s? Lazy -- N.IRL rock/boogie band c1983-84, recorded at least two demo tapes Le Call -- 80s "hard-edged dance" with powerful bass sound; session for Radio Ulster 3/1988; their name begs the perennial question, file under 'C' or 'L', n'est pas? There was an (awful) new wave era band from San Francisco called The Call, so perhaps Le Call was used to avoid confusion. Legalized Slaughter -- Dundalk punk band - mentioned in scene report in MRR #12 (March 1984) released a tape on the Psycho-Fiction label (UK) Played on the bill at the "Let's Get Serious 2" punk festival held at the TV Club on the 30 September 1983 featuring the cream of Dublin's punk bands at the time plus headliner Conflict.

The Low -- late 70s-early 80s The Lower Pool - two tracks ("Minus A Nickel", "The Tune Of It") on the Guru Weirdbrain LP (1985) which couldn't be more different. "Minus A Nickel" is pure honky tonk country+western and pretty awful. "The Tune Of It" is lo-fi bedroom tunelessness which evokes the Legendary Stardust Cowboy. Both tracks are credited to F.Maher, apparently one Frank Maher. A single "Sunkie Days" / "Way Under" recently surfaced on ebay with (p) 1979! Credited to the Lower Pool Band, both sides by Maher. On Made To Measure Records with no other clues as to its date or origin.
