From: Derry
Active: 1983-91
Style: Pop
Bio:
Feargal Sharkey was lead singer with the mighty Undertones from
their inception in 1975 until the split in 1983.
He launched his solo career the same year with a one-off recording collaboration with Vince Clarke
(ex Depeche Mode, Yazoo, pre Erasure) as The Assembly which charted in the UK.
He then signed to Virgin Records and enjoyed a surprise pop career (i.e. it came as a surprise to me)
for a number of years in the mid-1980s.
In stark contrast to the music of The Undertones, Sharkey recorded a string of strong
pop singles for Virgin during 1984-86 including a UK #1 in November 1985. His debut album
produced by Dave Stewart of The Eurthymics was released the same month and reached
#12. He never repeated this success.
Following the success of the debut album and singles and a successful world tour
(which probably visited places he'd never managed to reach with The Undertones),
his second album was recorded in Los Angeles with Danny Kortchmar in 1987. This
proved much less successful. Work on the third album began in 1989. Sharkey
By the time moved into the business
side of the music industry shortly after it's release in 1991.
He was not involved in the Undertones reunion.
